2.2.2.2  –  4.2.1.1  –   timpani   –   strings

The third symphony marks the apotheosis of Routh’s musical journey, utilising and developing material from key previous works, stretching back to The Manger Throne, Op 3, in 1959.  The first movement is derived from Prelude V of The Well Tempered Pianist, Op 77, with the addition of a second subject and symphonic development. The second movement is a fuller treatment of Prelude XXII of The Well Tempered Pianist, Op 77, which had already been transcribed for chamber orchestra as Elegy, Op 78. The third movement is the full orchestral version of the final movement, La Volta,  of the Suite for String Orchestra, Op 59.
